RSVP’s 39th Annual Tribute Day
On Tuesday, September 27, 2011, over 400 volunteers and friends of RSVP enjoyed a wonderful day. The occasion was RSVP’s 39th Annual Tribute Day. The day began with an exhibition by 28 agencies and companies who provided a great deal of important information relating to topics of interest to our volunteers. Luncheon followed in the main ballroom where everyone enjoyed a delicious meal along with music, dancing and raffle prizes! RSVP was presented with a Proclamation from Suffolk County which recognized the approximately 1,000 RSVP volunteers who each gave at least 50 hours of service at their sites this past year. The “Outstanding Volunteer” Award was presented to Hedi Moore who, at almost 90 years of age, has been an RSVP volunteer for the past 22 years – most notably as a Telephone Reassurance volunteer at our Smithtown office. Hedi’s is a reassuring voice heard every Thursday morning by over 200 homebound elderly. Also recognized with RSVP’s “Community Leader” Award was Kevin Pechin. Kevin most generously stepped up to the plate and, on his own time, created a new and beautifully updated website for RSVP (www.rsvpsuffolk.org). Hope you enjoy the pictures of this year’s Tribute Day and don’t forget to mark your calendars for next year’s event which will take place on Monday, September 10, 2012.

Introducing the "New" and "Improved" Speakers' Bureau!
RSVP has reconstructed our Speakers' Bureau topics to include three very interesting and current "issues" of today: "Take Control and Declutter Your Life," "Medication Management," and "Caregiving - Assisting the Elderly: Guidance, Tips and Resources." All three topics are presented in a powerpoint format by trained, enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers. Each topic presentation lasts approximately 30-45 minutes and handouts are provided. In 2012, presentations on “Avoiding Senior Scams” as well as “Medicare, Social Security & You” will be added.
If you belong to a senior group or know of a group or organization that would benefit from these presentations, please call 631-979-9490 ext. 16 to set up a date and topic from our Speakers' Bureau menu. This exciting RSVP program is available at no cost.
Cleaning For A Reason:
If you know any woman currently undergoing chemotherapy, please pass the word to her that there is a cleaning service that provides FREE housecleaning – once per month for four months while she is in treatment. All she has to do is sign up and have her doctor fax a note confirming the treatment. Cleaning For A Reason will have a participating maid service in her zip code area arrange for the service. This organization serves the entire USA and currently has 547 partners to help these women. It’s our job to pass the word and let them know that there are people out there that care. Be a blessing to someone and pass this information along.
Living Healthy with Better Choices Fifty-three percent of seniors over 60 have a chronic condition which can range from obesity to arthritis to heart disease. This six-week "free" series of workshops, developed by the University of Stanford and taught locally by Master Trainers, will enable participants to control their chronic condition by nutrition, self-awareness, exercise, relaxation techniques and peer support. |
