Volunteer Opportunities

The Patchogue Arts Council is looking for volunteers to help with art, music and poetry events by handing out information and interacting with the public at the art gallery. They also need volunteers who are interested in data entry and compiling mailings.  They offer discounts to local businesses and a “reward raffle.”  Please call Sue on extension 15 if you are interested in this site.

American Red Cross – Yaphank/Huntington Areas.  Volunteers are needed for various opportunities.  One task is DAT (Disaster Action Training).  Call Maureen on extension 16 for more information.

SNAP, an after school program in the William Floyd school district needs volunteers to tutor students and/or help them with their homework.  They also need volunteers to mentor students with various counseling needs.  For more information, call Sue on extension 15.

MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) in the Huntington area needs volunteers to help at community/health events; others are needed to call schools and businesses.  Volunteers are also needed to maintain the “Garden of Awareness” at Farmingdale College.  If interested, please call Maureen on extension 16.

The Islip Arts Council/Museum is looking for volunteers to assist with clerical tasks and special events.  Flexible hours and volunteers receive a 10% discount on programs, classes and the museum.  Call Sue on extension 15 to learn more about this opportunity.

Head Start Assistants in all areas of Suffolk County are needed to help in the classroom to help preschoolers with reading, cognitive activities and modeling good classroom behavior.  If this sounds like something of interest to you, please call Maureen on extension 16.

RSVP’s Feelin’ Good Program is looking for instructors to lead the following classes:  Zumba Gold, yoga and line dancing.  For more information on this fun volunteer opportunity, call Sue on ext. 15.

A variety of soup kitchens/food pantries exist throughout Suffolk County, and they could use the help of volunteers.  Call the RSVP office for more details and locations.

Interested in helping others manage their chronic medical conditions.  Lear how you can volunteer...Lead the Way – Become a Peer Leader

We’re looking for open-minded, friendly individuals who are comfortable speaking in front of groups and enjoy helping people.  Please consider becoming a Peer Leader in RSVP’s Living Healthy with Better Choices Program.  In this capacity, you will be leading a six-week workshop series that empowers older adults and their caregivers to take charge of their chronic conditions, such as diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease, chronic pain, anxiety, etc. You will receive free training and ongoing support.  Workshop materials and content are provided for you and are easy to use!  The next Peer Leader training will take place on January 10, 11, 17 and 18.  For more information, please call Program Coordinator Maureen McCarthy at 631-979-9490 ext. 18.

FarewellWe at RSVP bid farewell to Carmela Azzarelli and Bruce Petrucci.  They have ventured out into full-time positions at other human service organizations.  We wish them the best of luck at their new jobs.
