Volunteer Opportunities

Patchogue Arts Council is looking for volunteers to help with art, music and poetry events by handing out information and interacting with the public at the art gallery. They also need volunteers who are interested in data entry and compiling mailings to be sent to the public. They offer discounts to local businesses and a “Rewards Raffle” where volunteers could win gift certificates, concert tickets and hockey tickets. Islip Arts Council/Museum is looking for volunteers to assist with clerical tasks (filing, typing, data entry); also looking for someone to help with research and assist with special events. 	SNAP, an after-school program in the William Floyd school district needs volunteers to tutor students and/or help them with their homework. They also need volunteers to mentor students with various counseling needs. Coaching and other after-school activities are areas where volunteers are needed too. 	The Huntington Senior Center is in need of a volunteer "Bridge" instructor as well as someone to teach "Mah Jong." They also need a volunteer to fill in during the summer months as an exercise instructor. If any of these positions sound interesting to you, please contact Sue on extension 15.
	Breast Cancer Helpin Bay Shore is looking for a volunteer “Reiki” therapist as well as someone to lead a support group for breast cancer survivors (possibly a retired Social Worker). The support group leader is needed only once a month on the fourth Wednesday in the evening. A volunteer massage therapist, reflexology therapist, and art therapist are needed as well.
St. Hugh's Senior Center in Huntington Station is looking for an exercise instructor. If interested, contact Sue on extension 15.
	The Huntington Hills Center for Health and Rehabilitation in Melville needs volunteers in a variety of assignments. You can volunteer in the nursing home to help out with activities and recreation. Days, evenings and weekend positions are available. Also, the Adult Day Healthcare Services Program has volunteer positions open for retired Music, History and English teachers to run groups for participants. The American Cancer Society in Hauppauge has volunteer opportunities in their "Road to Recovery" program. Caring persons are needed to drive patients, using their cars, to cancer treatments. 	Spangle Drive Senior Center in North Babylon is looking for a volunteer piano player to accompany the Glee Club as well as a volunteer to teach line dancing to a very enthusiastic group of seniors. Visiting Nurse Service & Hospice of Suffolk is in need of caring and compassionate volunteers to visit hospice patients in their homes to provide much-needed companionship and respite for the caregivers. Volunteers are also needed in the thrift shop (Huntington) and as administrative help (Main Street, Northport). Please call Maureen on extension 16 if you are interested.
	Brookhaven Memorial Hospital is in need of volunteers to provide comfort care to their patients, including socializing and assisting at mealtime. Also they are in need of volunteers to do clerical work, deliver mail, help at the reception desk and also work in the gift shop. A new Head Start site has opened at 159 Railroad Street in Huntington Station! Volunteers are needed in the classroom to assist the teachers. Also, volunteers are needed to help in the garden and the office. If this is something you might like to try, please call Maureen on extension 16.
	The Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook has many various opportunities for volunteers such as recreation assistants, assisting with one-on-one recreation therapy, trip volunteers, and giving special attention to residents in the Reflections Unit who have different forms of dementia. RSVP's Community Computer Connections Program is looking for computer refurbishers, delivery people and installers. Join this wonderful program and refurbish computers to be given to low-income families and individuals in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Call extension 13 for more information.

Huntington Youth Bureau is a new RSVP station that enriches the lives of youth in their local communities. They work to develop the students' social, personal and academic skills to help them excel in all areas of their lives. 	The Long Island Maritime Museumin Sayville is looking for docents (tour guides) for school children’s tours. They are also in need of a volunteer grounds and maintenance person and anyone interested in gardening as well as someone to answer phones and work at the front desk and gift shop.
Calling all line dancers, exercise enthusiasts and arts & crafts devotees - If you would like to work with seniors at a senior center, Bay Area Nutrition Center in Mastic and the Bellport Senior Nutrition Center in Bellport are looking for line dance instructors, Tai Chi instructors and art & crafts instructors. 	Sweetbriar Nature Preserve Come volunteer at Smithtown's very own nature center, Sweetbriar. The nature center is located on a beautiful 55 acre woodland preserve alongside the Nissequogue River. Join a group of caring, dedicated people whose mission is to provide nature education and wildlife rehabilitation to Town of Smithtown residents.
