In the Spotlight

From time to time, our Newsletter likes to spotlight various volunteers who continue to amaze us with their contagious spirit, dedication and commitment to helping others. The following are three such volunteers who we think you will enjoy reading about.

RSVP St. Gerard Majella Soup KitchenVolunteer-
Penny Cocchiara

Penny Cocchiara Penny Cocchiara, an RSVP volunteer since 2006, has been named Woman of the Year in Civic Activity by the Port Times Record -- well deserved, as one reads all Penny’s community work, in addition to managing the soup kitchen at St. Gerard Majella’s in Port Jefferson Station. At the soup kitchen alone, Penny has give over 1,700 hours of service along with a handful of other dedicated RSVP volunteers at that site.

Penny, a resident of Selden, has a lifetime of volunteering quietly behind the scenes -- a 40 year resume in helping others! In addition to the soup kitchen and various other congregational activities, including organizing Relay for Life in her parish, she is an active member and former treasurer of the Terryville Homemakers Unit.

As the saying goes, “those who can, do….those who can do more, volunteer.” Penny Cocchiara is a shining example of active aging AND the spirit of service that goes with volunteering. Our heartfelt congratulations on being chosen Women of the Year in Civics from all of us at RSVP!
