Summer day trips

Why not plan a “DAY TRIP” to one of RSVP’s partnering sites this summer? They’re close to home, interesting, informative, but most of all, lots of fun to visit. Here are just a few of these wonderful locations.



Fire Island Lighthouse The Fire Island Lighthouse. Whether you love maritime history, climbing lighthouses, nature, or the beach, there is something for everyone at the Fire Island Lighthouse. The Lighthouse is open year-round and is worth a visit in every season. You can take a ferry ride from Bay Shore to Kismet, then walk or take a water taxi to the Lighthouse. Or you can drive to Robert Moses State Park, Parking Field #5 (parking fee in season). Park on the east end of the parking lot and follow the boardwalk about ¾ of a mile to the Lighthouse. Summer hours: 10 am – 5 pm.



Fire Island Seashore The Fire Island Seashore. Each Seashore site offers ranger-guided activities in season that highlight the location’s special resources, including tours of Old Mastic House at the William Floyd Estate and tours of the Sunken Forest. For more information, call 631-569-2100.



The Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum The Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum. Learn the history of Long Island’s whaling heritage. There’s always an exciting exhibit or workshop. Why not come to “Build-A-Boat,” a workshop for adults and kids that takes place each Friday in August from 11 am to 1 pm. Let your creativity soar, crafting unique vessels using a range of wooden materials and plenty of imagination! For more information, call 631-367-3418.



Walt Whitman Birthplace. Walt Whitman Birthplace. This wonderful museum honoring the great American poet is located in Huntington and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has a lovely gift shop and a very informative tour through Walt Whitman’s birth house. To find out more about this famous site, please call 631-569-2100.



The Long Island Maritime Museum The Long Island Maritime Museum. Whether it’s boat building, shipwrecks, shellfish harvesting or recreational boating that captures your imagination, it’s all here at this great museum located in Sayville. All ages will enjoy learning the links between the Island’s maritime and natural histories and will encounter some of the amazing creatures living in our local waters. The Long Island Museum of American Art, History and Carriages The Long Island Museum of American Art, History and Carriages. This amazing museum, located in Stony Brook is dedicated to inspiring people of all ages with an understanding and enjoyment of American art, history and carriages as expressed through the heritage of Long Island and its diverse communities. The museum is open Thursday through Sunday from 12 Noon to 5 pm. For more information, call 631-751-0066.



The Long Island Seaport and Eco Center The Long Island Seaport and Eco Center. Located in scenic Port Jefferson, this center is focused on the preservation of Long Island’s maritime heritage and the conservation of Long Island Sound. Currently, it is almost exclusively involved with its wooden boat building and restoration projects housed in the Bayles Boat Shop, located in P.J. Harborfront Park.
